Umpiring
England Netball define the pathway for people looking to qualify as an Umpire. They organise courses and oversee the administration of qualifications. For the most up to date information go to their website and click Get Involved, Officiating
Tyne and Wear County Association manage the process for progression towards the Into and C Award officiating qualifications. The North East Region manage the process for progression towards the B Award officiating qualification.
The first step on the Umpire pathway is completing an Into Officiating course. Practical experience following the course should be gained in Club or in the local social leagues. The County can direct trainees to Mentors who can help candidates to progress to their practical Assessment. The Into Officiating practical assessment is administered by the County Umpiring Secretary.

Having completed a C Award course, practical experience should be gained in Club or in the local social leagues. Once the candidate has reached an appropriate level of competency, contact the County Secretary and a Mentor will be allocated to confirm readiness to officiate in Division 5 of the County League (where they must be accompanied by a Mentor for all matches). The Mentor will advise the candidate when they are ready to apply for their Practical Assessment. C Award Practical Assessments are taken in the County League at Division 4 level.
Once qualified as a C Award Umpire, the County has a progression route for new Umpires progressing up the divisions. Newly qualified umpires will be able to officiate in Division 5 until they have gained experience and been reviewed by a Mentor who will agree their progression to Division 4. And similarly for progression from Division 4 to Division 3.
C Award Umpires who have gained experience in Division 3 and wish to progress to their B Award should contact the County Umpiring Secretary to register their interest. They will be reviewed in Division 3 and alongside this should complete the B Award Umpiring Course. At an appropriate point they will be allocated matches to officiate in Division 2 with a Mentor. They should also contact the North East Regional Umpiring Secretary who will offer them opportunities to officiate in regional competitions.
Whilst the County Umpiring Secretary can provide contact information for possible Mentors it is the trainee’s responsibility to contact a Mentor and to organise matches for themselves. Any Umpiring fee for matches should be offered to the Mentor. As well as Umpiring there are other opportunities available in Officiating. Experienced C and B Award Umpires are eligible to qualify as Assessors at both C and B Award level. Alternatively, there is the option to qualify as a Technical Official and undertake tasks such as scoring, timing or compiling match statistics at regional and national matches.
