Umpiring

Irrespective of your age, ability, or experience of netball, if you have a passion for the game there are many options open to you in Officiating. England Netball’s new virtual Into Officiating Award is the starting point for all umpires beginning their journey on the officiating pathway. Once qualified, it’s entirely up to you how far you progress, be it at a local grassroots league, in a school or at one of EN’s competitions.

England Netball define the umpiring pathway, run courses and oversee qualifications. For the most up to date information go to their website and click Get Involved, Officiating, or click on the link to the right.

Tyne and Wear County Association offers support to help an Umpire progress towards qualification. The County have Mentors who are available to work with trainees and the County’s Officiating Officer administers local practical assessments for the Into Officiating and C Awards.

Once qualified as a C Award Umpire, the County has its own progression route and rules that govern how Umpires advance through the divisions of the County League as their skills develop and they progress.

Umpires who have attended the C Award Course, given approval, may umpire matches in the lowest divisions of the County League. They must be accompanied by a Mentor on the side of the court for the full duration of every match. Once qualified, they are can umpire in Divisions 5 and 6 of the County League initially. After a number of matches they will be watched by a Mentor who may give them permission to move up to Division 4. New umpires will officiate for at least one full season, possibly more, at Division 4 level before being considered for progression to Division 3.

Experienced C Award Umpires who wish to progress to their B Award may officiate in Division 2 with an approved mentor in the first instance. As the Umpire progresses, they may move up to officiating Division 2 games themselves and Division 1 games with a mentor. Alongside this they should also contact the North East Regional Umpiring Secretary who will offer them help and opportunities to officiate at a regional level.

The County Umpiring Secretary can provide a list of approved Mentors based in the County. It is the trainee’s responsibility to contact a Mentor and to organise matches for themselves, the Mentor may offer to help with this. Any Umpiring fee for the match should go to the Mentor.

As well as Umpiring there are other opportunities available in Officiating. Experienced C and B Award Umpires are eligible to qualify as Assessors at both C and B Award level. Alternatively, there is the option to qualify as a Technical Official and undertake tasks such as scoring, timing or compiling match statistics at regional and national matches.
